NIH Funding to Medical Schools

Historically, there have been four medical schools in Los Angeles County.  They are Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Willowbrook, USC Keck School of Medicine in Boyle Heights, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine in Westwood, and Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona.  Kaiser Permanente will open its first medical school in the fall of 2019 in Pasadena.  UCLA and USC remain the top two medical schools in NIH funding within Los Angeles Count.  UCLA and USC remain the top two medical schools in NIH funding within Los Angeles County.

Why is NIH funding important?
The National Institutes of Health is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, investing more than $32 billion a year to enhance life, and reduce illness and disability.  NIH funded research has led to breakthroughs and new treatments, helping people live longer, healthier lives, and building the research foundation that drives discovery (National Institutes of Health).
