Housing + Transportation Affordability Index
Housing and transportation are the top two largest expenditures in a typical household. The Housing and Transportation (H+T®) Affordability Index provides a comprehensive view of affordability that includes both the cost of housing and the cost of transportation at the neighborhood level (Center for Neighborhood Technology).
The H+T® Index is especially valuable in Los Angeles County, where housing is less affordable and more people commute to work and school than other metropolitan areas. In the analysis, a typical household in Los Angeles County spends 57% of their total income on housing and transportation, combined. Given that the median household income in Los Angeles County is estimated at $61,300 in 2016 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 1-Year Estimates), a typical household spends more than $34,900 per year on housing and transportation.
